Blue
Ridge Literacy Council's English as a second Language Program
serves non-English speaking or low level English speaking.
The goal is to help adults achieve a
level of English, both oral and written, that allows them
to accomplish their goals and participate fully as individuals,
family members, workers, and members of the community at large.
Each
student is taught English, reading and writing in one-to-one
or in a small group (2 to 5) by trained volunteer tutors using
materials suited to their English level and goals. Many supplemental
materials are available. Levels of instruction go from beginner
through preparation to enter curriculum or technical programs.
The
staff provides intake, evaluation, testing for all students,
ongoing support for pairs and groups, training, research in
adult ESL techniques and materials, and counseling and referral
services.
Hours
are set to be compatible with students schedule. Some have
class as early as 8:30 AM and some as late as 9:00 PM. There
are NO charges. Tutoring sites are located throughout the
county. |
