"It's really easy to become a tutor"

All that's required is a desire to help, completion of a 12 hour training course and about 3 hours a week. Students and tutors generally meet twice a week for 1 1/2 hours at a time and public place convenient to both.

We have an orientation to help you decide if tutoring is for you.  Tutor Trainings are also offered at a variety of times to accommodate any schedule. (See schedule below.)

After you complete your training you will be able to start tutoring a student in either our Adult Basic Literacy Program (teaching reading and writing to someone whose native language is English)   or in our English as a Second Language (ESL) Program.

Blue Ridge Literacy Council provides volunteers and students with free materials and support as you work.  Most of the books we use have excellent Teacher’s Manuals that take you step by step through each lesson.   We encourage you to take advantage of periodic in-service trainings in special topics and to participate in monthly Tutor Network meetings where you have an opportunity to share your challenges and triumphs with other tutors.
