Mission Mondays are a time to understand the literacy crisis right here in Henderson County, the economic impact of low literacy, and the work that the Blue Ridge Literacy Council is doing to ensure their Mission is going beyond the basics of literacy education to strengthen the community.
“Literacy is no longer defined as the ability to read and write; in today’s global multicultural digital economy, literacy education must go beyond basics to ensure communities are poised for success” said Autumn Weil, Executive Director.
A beyond basics literate community is a stronger community. The Blue Ridge Literacy Council strengthens the local community through a continuum of sustainable programming that approaches literacy instruction in a way that ensures individuals are functioning in society by improving civic engagement, employment opportunities, community health, and school readiness and success – all of which improve our local economy.
Mission Mondays should be attended by those who are passionate about education and literacy, want to learn more about the Literacy Council’s impact, and/or may be interesting in volunteering including tutoring. Mission Mondays will take place at 11 am on the second Monday of each month beginning September 10.
